Introduction This work is being conducted to address concerns on the status of the Bahama Parrot. Outside of one major study in the mid 80's, no work had been done on the Bahama Parrot. With concerns for most of the Parrots in the West Indies, it is important to take steps to prevent the decline and extinction of this group of birds.
This Project has been in progress since May 2002. A set of point counts stations were set up throughout the southern portion of Abaco Island and the first of 4 population estimates was conducted. During the summer of 2003, Nests were monitored throughout the breeding season.
Chicks and Adults had radio transmitters put on them to monitor their survival and movement during the upcoming year. Until the fall of 2004, transmittered birds will tracked to give us more information about their life throughout the year.
This project is what cooperation is all about. Individuals from the US and Bahama have come together to make it possible to find out what needs to be done to protect this endearing parrot. Through a joint effort from the Abaco Chamber of Commerce, USGS, US Fish and Wildlife Service and Friends of the Environment (Abaco) what began as a year and a half study, took off and is still continuing.
